Should I get a 2nd opinion?
So for the passed couple of weeks (that I’ve noticed, could have been longer) I’ve had an abnormal (to me) amount of itching primarily on my hands and feet. The past couple of nights it has been so bad that I have barely gotten any sleep. I brought this up with a coworker and she said that is exactly what happened to her when she had obstetric cholestasis and the itching was the ONLY symptom she had for that.
If I was just having the normal every day kind of itching I wouldn’t have thought twice about this but the fact that it’s been so bad that it’s actually kept me up and I’ve nearly scratched my skin raw in some places just made me worried.
I decided I’d bring it up with the doctor and see if he had any concerns but I also realize that there is a stigma on first time moms for being overly paranoid so I don’t feel like he really took me seriously.
The doctor didn’t test anything other than what is normal for our appointments - weight, blood pressure, and urine. He just told me to used cortisone cream and take Benadryl which I’m not really entirely comfortable with or at peace with. He just said the itching was normal for the third trimester. But the fact that it’s kept me up two - three nights in a row now is very concerning to me.
Should I get a second opinion since he really tested nothing and just gave me a simple option?
If I don’t get a second opinion I’m going to just give the Benadryl and cortisone a couple of days and if nothing changes I’m going to demand the test because my child’s life could be at risk.
P.S. I know my hands and feet aren’t just dry, and even if they were there is no reason itching should be so bad that it’s keeping me up.
