Getting sick more often while breastfeeding?

I thought I read that breastfeeding is supposed to help both baby and mom get sick less often, but I feel like I'm getting sick more often! I've been breastfeeding for 10.5 months and I've been sick 3 or 4 times already. Do you feel like you are getting sick more, less or the same?

It doesn’t improve mom’s immune system. The antibodies you make/have are passed through the breast milk and help the baby’s immune system. You are sleep deprived, probably not as well hydrated or nourished as you would be otherwise and those are two prime factors that break down your immune system.

I never got sick once in the two years I breastfed my daughter. Even working as an elementary teacher, I avoided all those nasty bugs. I swear there is something magical about breastfeeding for mom too. Are you still taking your prenatal vitamin?

I was wondering the same thing. I have been sick more this year while breastfeeding than usual. The good thing tho is that by baby hasn’t gotten it. She has stayed strong and healthy.

Sleep deprivation could definitely be a factor, although every 3 hours is still very normal. I would say try taking a daily probiotic, make sure you are drinking TONS of fluids, and rest as much as you can. I started side-laying while I nursed at night so I could rest while she ate.
