Would you change your name to avoid racism?
So my family is Cuban, but even though my grandparents were born in Cuba both of their families are from Spain, so this makes everyone in my family look very white as in blond hair, green eyes. My mom and I even have freckles, and she burns horribly in the sun. Honestly the only way that anyone can tell any of my family are Hispanic is from our last name.
We’ve been through A LOT of racism. It started when I was 10 and we moved to North Carolina. It has definitely affected my parents in their workplace as they have been passed up for jobs, attacked at work (a man came into the bank where my father works and started screaming about how ridiculous it was that a piece of shit s**c was in charge), and have obviously dealt with those shitty microagressions. It even affected me at school as some of my teachers tried to lower my grades and turned a blind eye when I was being physically bullied by my classmates.
Anyway now we all live in NY and today my mom came home in tears because her boss started saying that she can’t write even though that wasn’t her work he was complaining about, and my mother has a masters in English from one of the top universities in the world. My mom obviously wants to change her name to something more neutral/ambiguous because she’s tired about the constant racism.
So I’m curious, what are your thoughts on POC doing this to avoid poor treatment?
