Does a pap smear hurt?

I'm 23 and never had a pap smear pr pelvic exam.  I know I should've by now.  I'm terrified though.  What's it like?

i teared up my first time lol. but i was also very nervous and didn't know what to expect.  now i breathe thru it and relax.  best thing to do is not tense up.  i work at a health clinic and chaperone a TON of paps. everyone makes faces,  but its over in just a few minutes.  ps they dont collect a sample of your cervical mucous. they collect cells from your cervix.  with a tiny broom looking thing.  youll do great! your health is priority 😊

I literally forget to breathe when I have it done. but their little instrument hurts down there but if you can just take slow deep breaths and remember to relax your legs, you'll be fine. it's a pretty quick, simple process. you'll have it done so many times in life,  you'll get use to it :) I'm still not, but lol

I just got one done two weeks ago and it shouldn't hurt, feels weird, like imagine a swab on the inside of your cheek feeling but u know.. on your cervix lol. If it hurts you probably have a not delicate doctor. I've had better luck with women vs men. Men don no how sensitive our parts are.

It only hurts temporarily for me because I had endometriosis, but only on my left side. Otherwise it doesn't hurt, but the spreaders are uncomfortable.

If it hurts, then there’s something going wrong. Either there’s something wrong with your body (yikes!), they’re badly trained and you’ll want to see about getting someone else (because you’ll be doing these a lot as life goes on), or you’re too tense - I have terrible anxiety when it comes to my body, so I could not get my muscles relax initially and I had a bit of pain as a result (but then my doctor stopped and talked me through it and started again, waiting for me to calm down with each step). Take some deep breaths and ask your doctor as many questions as you have. Try to think about other things. Ideally there should only be a bit of pressure and MAYBE a slight scrapping sensation.

It doesn’t necessarily hurt .. you’ll feel some pressure and maybe get a cramp or two .. it only takes a couple of seconds and the tool they use to take the sample of Cervical mucous looks like a small paint brush and the best part is you only need to get a Pap smear done once a year. You will be fine ❤️

It’s always a little weird taking your pants off in the doctors office but your doctor does not care. Doctors are professionals, it’s their job to keep you healthy. Go get that Pap smear! Put your health first!
