Do you play it safe with baby names?

What I mean by “ play it safe “ is I mean only choosing names that everyone is aware of and are overall pretty standard or “ boring “ with very simple spellings, just not a lot of creativity at all.  
Ex: Names like Sarah, Emma, Emily, etc

Not that you’re judging anyone for spelling a name the understandable way or anything, right? You’re pretty clear with the tone of this post how you feel. 
Bias against extremely “creative” names is a known issue. I would rather give my child the best chance in life that I can, which includes giving him a name that people have a chance of spelling/pronouncing.

My name is Sarah... it’s one of my favorite girl names. I don’t think it’s boring at all. I cannot tell you how grateful I am that my parents gave me such a beautiful, classic name as opposed to some trendy-ass name like Oaklynn. I’m having a little girl and I am giving her a classic name as well. 
To each their own, but, in my opinion classic names are way better than taking a word and adding -lynn, -lee, or -son to the end of it.

we choose names of actual historical figures that also have a language of origin meaning and we spell then as phonetically accurate as possible. we don't make up names and spell with a preference for less common letters as we don't think our children are a novelty...

We chose primarily family names because we like to have sentiment and meaning behind our children's names. I never gave a thought to whether or not people were aware of the names or if the spellings were widely accepted. "Safe" has nothing to do with giving my children names with a strong foundation of love. 
My kids are William Devor (after my husband's adoptive and bio father respectively), Bryce Russell (my dad chose Bryce, Russell is a great grandfather), Maryellen Dianne (after the woman who saved my life and my mother-in-law respectively), and we're expecting Bobbi Sue in March. She is named after my father Bobby Gene and my grandmother Peggy Sue who both passed away from the same cancer.
Go right on ahead and judge my "safe" names. They will always have more meaning to me than any unique name I could have ever thought of.

No, I like traditional names that’s are spelled in the traditional manner.
There is nothing unique about a name that’s said the exact same way as a popular name but is spelled with 20 extra letters and will require correction for a lifetime (Emaleigh/Emily) It’s still going to sound the same as every other kid in the class when someone says it out loud.
I would classify a “unique” name as being its own thing not a spin off of a well known name.
