Anyone with hearing loss?

Question

I’m hearing impaired and wear hearing aids and am trying to learn sign language. Does anyone have suggestions on a good way to learn ASL? Also does anyone else out there have hearing loss of any kind?

I’m not hearing impaired, but I found the best way to learn ASL is to fully immerse yourself into deaf culture. Learning in a class or from a video on YouTube is very different from learning from someone who’s deaf in person. I teach at a school for the deaf and blind, went in knowing very little sign, and learned so much from my kids and the teachers. I would suggest finding an ASL/deaf support group in your area. They’re more common than you’d think

I’m also trying to learn ASL, I’m not hearing impaired at all but I think it’s a really cool thing and also helpful to those that are hearing impaired. There’s a lot of great apps and YouTube channels that help me learn. I find it easiest to start off fingerspelling and basic words or sentences, then build off of there. The app called The ASL App is my favorite I’ve found. Learning fingerspelling is really beneficial because if you don’t know the sign for a word, you can just spell it. If you try going through your day signing as you go it’ll make it a lot easier. Have fun learning ASL!!

I have hearing loss and ASL That on Youtube is really good! Also Lifeprint is amazing. It’s imporant to learn sentecne structure and grammar because it’s so different. Sometimes local library’s have classes or the local Deaf school.

I used to have a lot of friends who were hearing impaired, or had deaf parents growing up. Immersing yourself in the culture is super helpful and practicing in front of a mirror can also be useful

I also recommend immersion as much as possible. For me, this was from a Deaf ASL teacher at a community college. I had taken a few classes before, but learned very little until her class. Many cities have weekly and monthly Deaf community events. Movie or game nights, or get-togethers at the food court, for example. They would love to include you and you will learn much more than from a book or YouTube. Good luck!
