Do customers swear/yell at you? How to handle it? 👿👿👿

I started a job answering support emails, and I'm really struggling with this. People get really nasty all the time. I've worked in stores before, but it's kind of different. There was always like the one asshole in the store, but most people can see you're a person, you know? But over email, you're faceless. I'm just exhausted dealing with it. It's draining to be polite (without sounding robotic) to people who just direct such nastiness to you. And the worst thing is that when I push back at all - sometimes I will politely but firmly end the conversation- they automatically go over my head to complain about me being unprofessional. Luckily, my boss knows the score and has no problems with my work. But just on a philosophical level, it seems really unfair that people call me unprofessional for opting out of being their punching bag?? 

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO TERRIBLE? If you work in customer service, how do you deal with it? Because every day, drinking something sounds like a better and better option and I'd rather not embrace alcohol as the solution. 🍸🍸🍸
