How do you comfort your S/O when they're upset?

i'm freshly new to this dating life, i genuinely don't know how to make them feel better. they'll come to me and explain "This happened" and I want to be someone they could turn to in these things cause it will help them. listening to someone can help anyone, but what kind of encouragement do you give your S/O?

my hubby last year was dealing with some family stuff that he had suppressed and it had finally made its way to the surface and he was very upset about it..i put my hands on the side of his face and told him that I was here with him and for him through everything..i told him that he was not alone and that I loved him and would listen..i hugged him real tight and just let him talk

I just listen to him vent and let him get it all out. Then I'll give him a hug and kiss and sometimes a back massage to relax him. Usually they just want you to be there listen and care to their problems

I think most of the time it’s just the fact of being there and listening to how they feel. Sometimes I don’t even need a response I just appreciate that my boyfriend is there to listen to me and support me. 
What I do is just ask if they want to talk about it. If they do then listen, if they don’t then just reassure them that if they do need someone to talk to that you’re always there for them. 
Offering advice can be helpful but I think just being supportive is great. 
I often figure out my own problems by just talking out loud to my boyfriend, he doesn’t even have to do much other than listen to me and hug me 😹
