can dirty ears cause cats to scratch them alot?

my cats ears are dirty with yellowish brown wax (I'm assuming it's wax) can that make them scratch constantly cuz their dirty?
also I just got her from her previous owner who didn't really pay much attention to her and I'm pretty sure she's never gotten her ears cleaned ever so I'm assuming that could be a reason for there being more than a bit

Generally if they’ve got excessive wax it means there’s ear mites (especially common in kittens). But excessive scratching could mean there’s an ear infection, irritated skin, etc (there’s so many reasons). It’s a good idea to take your cat into the vet so they can check the ears and make sure everything is ok. Cats don’t like to be dirty so dirty ears (or anywhere) is often a sign of problems in cats.
