Can dogs get STDs?

Question

My pup picked up a used condom on the beach right now. She only had it in her mouth for a second but do I have to worry about her getting a disease or is that not possible? Also, do I have to worry about her licking my face? If so, how long should I avoid that? Thanks. - Worried fur mama

All animals can get STIs. Generally they get their own diseases though- like herpes in dogs is a respiratory disease whereas in people it’s an STI. There’s human herpes and canine herpes viruses. So generally your dog would not get any STIs from people and vice versa. But their is a chance of interpsecies transmission with some viruses. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any STIs that transfer between dogs and people though besides crabs which dogs can get from people. Your dog will likely be fine especially since the condom is likely old so any bacteria/viruses will have likely died as the majority cannot live outside the body for long at all (which is why they tend to need sexual contact). Your dog and you are probably ok. But you can always call your vet and doctor just to be sure
