How tf do apartments work?

So my boyfriend and I are moving out together and my main question is how it starts. He’s 21 with good income, I am 19 full time student, part time worker. We have plenty of money to afford it but the application process is confusing. I dont want my name on the lease, is that possible. We both have credit scores that are accepted to get into the apartment. Does this mean I need to fill out an application too? Do i specify that i dont want to be on the lease? Can anyone clarify for me a little bit on the beginning process?

If you’re going to be there normally the landlord would want you on the lease as well. If you’re not on the lease your Boyfriend is able to kick you out anytime he wants because you would have no legal right to be there

Legally all tenants should be on the lease. But it really depends on the landlord. I know before I had a situation where the landlord didn't care if I was on the lease or not.  However, just so that the landlord knows who is living in their house, they run a background and credit check on each tenant. If you're not on the lease, you can also be put out at anytime.

I’m not sure where you’re looking to move in, or what your apartment community’s policies are, but at the apartments that I work at, we allow a resident to rent a 1 bedroom apartment, and have a gf/bf/child/etc live in the apartment with them by paying a double occupancy fee. Ours is an extra $100/month. If you look into apartments that are rented by the bedroom, most of them usually allow double occupancy. However, apartments that are rented as the full unit can be a bit more tricky, and since you are both over 18, they would likely want everyone on the lease (as mentioned in some of the other comments) for legal reasons. Just ask the leasing staff at whatever apartments you’re looking to move into. They’ll have a lot better advice, and know their specific policies better than strangers on a period app 😂

Generally they’re going to want to do a credit check, which you’ve mentioned and also verify employment (income amounts) with paystubs. I don’t know how much the rent is, but they’re going to want to be able to verify that whoever is on the lease has the ability to pay the rent every month. Obviously I don’t know how much money either of you make or how much the rent is, but they’re going to want to make sure the income you have covers it and then some. It doesn’t matter if you have a million dollars in the bank, they want to verify that there is consistent money coming in so that they will get paid. 
Looking at it from the perspective of a landlord, I would guess they would want both of you on the lease. Not saying anything about you personally, but people this young moving in together as a couple is a very risky situation for a landlord. There is more of a risk than an older couple or a married couple for the situation could get messy such as a break up, someone wanting to move out, someone losing their income, someone being foolish with finances, parties in and damage to the apartment...If I was a landlord, I would want you both on the lease because if something happens, I would want to know who to go after essentially for damages or money owed.
I don’t really see any benefit to you not being on the lease? Obviously you have your reasons, but it doesn’t really make sense to me to try to avoid this?
