I don’t know if he likes me

So my ex’s friend and I have become pretty good friends. I kinda like him but I don’t know if he likes me. He asked me to prom next month and we’ve been talking a lot since he asked. My friends are all really curious too. I don’t want to ask bc I don’t want to make things awkward so I don’t know what to do. One of my friends said next time she has a study secession with him in it she’s gonna ask him but I don’t he’d admit it then even if he did. What should I do? I don’t want things to be awkward
