If I gave deposit money to hold a house do they won’t give it to anyone else and sign a contract, and they rented it to someone else instead and now they don’t want to give us the deposit money back, Can I make some type of report? & where too?

I remember you posted about you being suspicious about renting from them.. Mostly everyone told you not to deal with these people unless the actual owner (girlfriends grandfather) makes the agreement with you.. obviously they were fraud.. I think you should get the proof of payment and the contract and go to the police.. Im very sorry this has happened to you and I hope you can get this resolved especially since u didn't decide not to live there and they are the ones who took your deposit and rent it to someone else.. Very frustrating !!

That money is legally yours (I believe, not a lawyer full disclosure) because a binding contract can be written or verbal. So if you gave them the deposit for rent and they didn't give you a place to live in return then you should file a police report. They would at least tell you what you need to do.

How much was the deposit? See how much the small claims court is for in your area. You can’t use lawyers at small claims court and a judge will decide who gets the money.

Do you have any sort of proof that you’ve placed a deposit (anything you’ve signed after placing the deposit). If you do then gather all the evidence along with the messages and take it to the police

If you have a copy of the signed contract, read it over. Sometimes, and it’s super shady and should have been a red flag, rentals will have a non-refundable deposit that if you don’t sign the lease within a certain amount of time they will no longer hold the property. If you did it all online, it’s possible the contract you signed wasn’t even with the original owner/property manager and you got scammed. I’d contact police and see what they say, your city should also have a renter’s association that you can report the person to.
