how would you go about talking to your s/o about starting a family?

boyfriend and I have been together for several years now and I'm getting to that point where I really want to start a family. I realize the responsibility it takes to raise a child, our financial situation isn't PERFECT. but who's is??? 
I want to get to a point to where we can start a family and I have no idea how to talk to him about it, what do I say, how do I bring it up without setting him off or shutting it down right away?

Well, my husband noticed how googly-eyed I'd get looking at babies, especially when my niece was born. And he asked once, "You really want a baby don't you." And of course I said yes! So the following weeks after that before we went to bed, I'd ask, "Do you want to have a baby one day?" He'd say yes. Then I'd ask a few nights later, "Would you like to start trying?" And we'd chat about it for a moment, kind of playfully. But then one say he said "How about we start new years?" And bam. The condoms were thrown away and we are still trying... 😁
