Should I surprise him with a cat?

We rescued our first cat, Chester.

Then we rescued a very sickly little kitten and named her Daisy.

She ended up getting sick a few times and the we took her to the vet, she would get better and then a week later be sick again, one vet visit after the other. I haven't even talked about it because I was so sad over it. It's still hard to look at pictures of her because I feel like I failed her.

I woke up and as soon as my feet hit the ground I heard her crying. She had gone under my bed and waited for me to wake up and started crying. Oh my god, the saddest sound I've ever heard. My heart dropped and I picked her up and she was so weak, she couldn't walk or hold her head up. She was perfectly fine the night before.

My so took her to the animal hospital immediately and they said the best thing for her was to put her down. So we did.

My so was so heart broken over this. We both were.

My cat Chester definitely needs a friend. There's my neighbors outside cats that come into our yard and he's an inside cat and tries to play with them through the windows. He mourned after Daisy was gone just like we did. He kept looking for her too, it was really sad. He gets attention from us but he still seems lonely.

So I'm thinking about going to a shelter and getting another cat that's already fixed and has its shots and is healthy and bring it home and surprise my so with it.

We have discussed getting another cat and he wants one, I don't know why we haven't done it yet. His birthday is coming up, birthday cat?
