Dog bite UK

I have just been on google out of interest and I read that if you have an intruder and you are home you could be liable and your dog gets put to sleep. Now I think that is out of order personally, an intruder comes over the fence and my dog bit them protecting his land he could be out down but is fine in other situations. My dog is a soft as f*** staffordshire bull terrier but can be very protective, when have work men we put him outside and if someone knocks on the door he can get rowdy and sees what our response is if we are fine, he is fine. We had an incident where someone followed me home, parked outside my home taking pictures of my house, I got my dog on his lead and walked out, due to my manner he was angry like me and was protecting me. Anyone else think it is wrong. By intruder I mean middle of the night someone breaking into your property. EDIT: I apologise only if unprovoked the intruder would be able to claim
