Can you be friends with an ex?

My partner and I recently broke up, I’m absolutely devastated. He’s my best friend, I think I would prefer him in my life as just a friend than not in my life at all. What is everyone’s opinion towards friendship after a breakup?

For me personally I couldnt be with someone that was friends with their ex.  I would be ok with casual acquaintance if they shared the dane group of friends.  I just know to many exes that have occasional hook ups or one or the other still harbors feelings.

I'm best friends with my ex and I don't feel it's wrong to have that....it's better than not having them at all...but it does hurt when they find someone else and tell you about it or you see them doting on the other person all over social media..hard to support but if they are that important to you then you just deal with it and wish them the best but if you want them back and know there's still love there then girl you better make it known before you lose them for good forever like I did

I think maybe later on down the road it could happen but you yourself said you were devastated... you need time to get over those romantic feelings for him before you have any type of friendship with him or else you will drive yourself crazy

I was married for over a decade to my first love. We started to drift apart as we got older and have now been divorced for 2 years. We are both in New relationships but still talk weekly at least. You can definitely be friends with an ex, but you have to give it time after the breakup. It won't happen right away.

I find it weird being friends with an ex. Especially if you get into a new relationship. I believe that if you’re friends with an ex it’s because you’re holding onto something.

I think it depends on the people involved. Me no when I live on I need to cut ties and forget about you. It’s how I heal but I have a friend who is I wouldn’t say friends but keeps in touch with a few exes. To me it’s crazy but it worked for her.

Not to discount your feelings, but in my previous relationships that I didn’t want to end I also wanted to be friends with my ex because I believed maybe they would come to see that we were meant to be together. But once I got over them and began dating someone new I had no interest in continuing the friendship. Not saying that this will be your experience or that other instances where people remained friends with their exes is wrong, but that was just how I felt afterwards. I personally don’t believe that 2 can remain true friends if the relationship were a serious one, which it sounds like yours was.

I was friends with my ex for almost 6 years after our breakup. We dated other people,  talked about our new relationships with other people. We were very close until, my best friend started dating him.😂👌 I'll leave that at that. But it all depends on if you can handle it or not, there's nothing wrong with having an ex as a friend.

I'm friends with almost all of my exs... some we've lost touch but when I see them we're friendly... others I talk to maybe a few times a year... so not like hang out every day but I wouldn't have a problem with that.... I'm extreamly happily married and I've always been the one to do the breaking up so I don't know of that's why
