How should someone tell partner they’re pregnant?

I didn’t know this was controversial but apparently it is. People at my office got into a very very heated debate about this today at lunch.

It seemed like the younger people were arguing that finding out you’re pregnant should be joint (like the partner can be there when you test or you’d tell him the same day).

The older women said that was selfish and impatient and that the woman should keep it a secret at least until she can announce it at a good time or in a special way (after making a nice dinner, with a gift, at a holiday).

Some went so far as to say that you shouldn’t tell your husband for several weeks just in case you had a miscarriage. The woman who was pushing that idea basically said it’s selfish to tell right away because then your partner would have to feel disappointment and pain if there was a miscarriage.

Everyone felt strongly. I’m not sure what I think.
