3-D printed body parts
I read an article in Readers Digest the other day about 3-D printers making human body parts.
Some of the key points from the article:
-With 3-D printed organs/body parts, there is no need to wait for a donated body part (either from a live donor or someone who passed away who was an organ donor)
-Cars are getting safer and medical care is getting more advanced, which means the live organ supply is limited
-3-D printed organ trials have already successful in animals
-But... it is highly controversial to test these parts on animals
-If/when 3-D printed organs became mainstream, it will be a huge money maker
-Big companies like Johnson & Johnson are already forming alliances with the companies making the parts (which further supports those corporate giants).
-L’Oréal already grows 54 square feet of skin per year but they’re using older/slower technology. Growing real skin could help so companies don’t have to test on animals.
I feel like there’s quite a bit of controversy sprinkled throughout the article: testing on animals, corporate giants getting ready to make even more money, big companies growing real skin (I had no idea!), and of course the headline: 3-D printed body parts.
What are your thoughts on all of this? Do you support 3-D printed body parts?
