Is making baby food worth it?

My daughter ped said it’s a trend now that people love to make their kids baby food. My daughter is 4 months so coming up soon in the next couple months she’ll start solids if she’s ready. Parents who have made baby food do you think it’s worth it? She said it’s a trend now but to me I think parents do it because it cost a lot less.

I know it’s probably cheaper but I don’t even care about that. I need to know what’s in my kids food. Jarred baby food has a shelf life of 6 years. What carrots do you know that are good for 6 years? Or chicken? I just don’t like the idea off all of those preservatives when I can get vegetables from my garden, steam them, and purée them. And get actual meats that I can purée myself.

I love making her baby food! It's super easy too. I steam her veggies and then puree them, adding breast milk to get the right consistency for her. Some people just use a blender but we have a baby bullet and love it! The flat blade is great for powderizing oatmeal.

I’m glad I did it. It was easy, cheaper and I knew exactly what was in it. Look on Pinterest. I found a recipe/directions on how to make a ton of food in a few hours. I spent 2 or so hours on Making purees and we had plenty for as long as she ate purees. I still make applesauce for her but that’s because I put prunes in it.

Someone in the not worth it camp.  I tried it, but couldn’t ever get it smooth enough for my son’s liking.  I didn’t even try with my other two.
My oldest loved his purées but the younger two only ate them for about two weeks.  After 2 weeks they refused purées and just ate what we ate.  I am glad I didn’t have a freezer full of purées.
When we did buy purées, we got the organic ones.  The ingredients aren’t too crazy in organic purées.  The extended shelf life comes from the canning process to seal the jars (pressure cooking) - not necessarily added preservatives.
As nonchalant as we are about purées, we are pretty anal about the other food we eat.  We cook from scratch most of the time because we like to know what goes into our food.

Worth it! You'll know exactly what it is it and it is cheaper. You can also make an Uber amount of different mixes that satisfies her (if she hates green beans sneak a little in with sweet potatos and such) take an hour or so a month and make a months worth!

I agree with PP. It's so much cheaper. If you buy, you're paying for packaging & convenience. I made my own & have tasted both homemade & store bought & 100% think homemade tastes a million times better. Plus, I find it an easier transition to table food when your kid gets older. At around 6 months, they can start eating pieces usually & you can start spicing baby food like you do your food (just have to be wary of salt & "heat", i.e. no cayenne 😋). In the end it's up to you.

Absolutely it's worth it. Firstly, you know exactly what is being fed to your baby. You know what you're adding to the meal and more importantly not adding! The cost factor obviously is a huge plus. Using fresh ingredients. Being able to try and implement a whole host of different foods - for example vegetables which babies do naturally struggle with initially due to the taste - they're almost programmed to eat sweeter as breast milk and formula milk are sweeter.
