My cat is an absolute mess with his food bowl

So I’ve tried just about everything tried separating his water bowl from his food bowl but either way he drags his bowls spills the water flips them messes up the rug I even came home one day to his food bowl being completely under the rug. A friend recommend I try the neater feeder basically is suppose to catch the food and has a tray underneath to catch the water that might spill. Well I read reviews on it everyone loved it and it worked for them but everyday I come home to a huge mess
