Meeting up with someone I met online (while in a foreign country)?

I'm going to be living in foreign country on my own for a few months soon. I've been doing language exchange with a few people online, there's but one guy in particular who I talk to. We've been talking for about a month. We talk every day, he's nice to me and he talks to me in the language I'm learning as well as in English (which is difficult to find usually). It's pretty much only been friendly, except for random little things that I may have just misinterpreted, but if he does like me in that way, I wouldn't mind. He's told me that he wants to see me, and is happy to wait till I come back to the country to meet me. I'd like to meet him too, but I'm wary of the fact that it could go wrong. My question is, does anyone have any advice for meeting up with people you met online, or more specifically in a foreign country? What are some precautions I should take? I'm already planning on telling a few people where I am and who I'm with, and to meet in a public place, things like that. I'm nervous about it as is and want to take all precautions to make sure I'm safe, especially since I'm in a different country I'm only somewhat familiar with. Thanks for any advice!!
