You don't HAVE to clean yourself out, it really depends on you and your partner's preference. As for getting started, work your way up. Start with a pinky finger a couple times, work up to a thumb, 2 fingers, a small toy, and then eventually sex. And LUBE LUBE LUBE.  You can never have enough lube. Don't use just a basic lube, you want something thick and jelly like, preferably one that says it's for anal sex. Astroglide is a good lube for anal play. Also, as hard as it sounds, try to relax your muscles. You're going to instinctively clench up and "pucker" up, and  it's going to take a bit
