Im the .02% that got pregnant on Skyla

Abby

I've seen a lot of polls and questions surrounding this issue and felt it was time I share my story.

The first week of March 2018 I was expecting my period. It didn't show but I wasn't concerned in even the slightest. I'd had the Skyla IUD in place for a year and I knew that your period could disappear so I just assumed this was that.

My period was about a week late and I'd been having period symptoms, cramping, irritability, tired, and breast tenderness. All normal symptoms for me when I was on my period, I was just waiting for the bleeding. Now mind you, my period shows up like clockwork so when it was late I should've been more concerned but I wasn't.

I was a little over a week late when I decided to take a test just to clear my conscious. It was negative, phew nothing to worry about. The test came in a pack of two so just to be safe I took the second one the next morning. Within seconds it was immediately positive...I took a digital one after that and it wasn't until I saw "yes +" that I actually believed it. I was completely in shock. Thank goodness for my incredible boyfriend being there as my rock through all of this or I'd still be in my room hyperventilating.

Once I calmed down I called my Dr.s office. They wanted to see me asap because when an IUD is in place and you get a positive pregnancy test, it's possible the pregnancy is ectopic. This means the pregnancy is developing in your Fallopian tubes, not your uterus like it should be.

I went in for an ultrasound the next morning and in the same photograph saw my gestational sac and my IUD. both in place exactly where we'd expect them to be. I was 5 weeks 5 days pregnant.

During that same appointment I had my IUD removed. I was warned by my doctor that for the safety of the baby the IUD had to be removed but there is a risk of miscarriage upon removing the IUD, it's a low risk but there is a risk.

A little over a week later at 6 weeks 6 days I miscarried.

I am the less than 1/2 a % that got pregnant on the Skyla IUD. I did almost everything right and still got pregnant. I never thought this would be a post I'm making but I wanted to to do it to inform other girls that it's possible.

My doctor believes I got pregnant because 1. The Skyla is a very low hormone, and it might have just not been enough hormone for my body to prevent pregnancy.

OR

2. The Skyla is the smallest 3 year IUD and it more easily moved out of place and allowed me to get pregnant.

There's no way to know what happened first, but either way I am the less than .02% that got pregnant with Skyla.

PLEASE be careful and if you feel like something is off, take a test! the sooner you know the better, especially if it is ectopic because that can be life threatening to you and your baby.
