I always told them when they are old enough to work and pay the bill for one so .. 16+ .
Right now they are 9 and 8 and have tablets with a kids texting/video app on it so they can get ahold of me if need be.

My 14 year old sister has one and I firmly believe she is too immature for that kind of thing. But there are other 14 year olds that could definitely handle it. I think it depends on the kid and should be left up to the parents to decide whether or not their child is responsible enough.

16-18 for a phone with internet capability. Until then, all they need is talk and text. If they need internet they can use the computer.

I got my first flip phone at 12 so I could call my parents when I went out with my friends. Now my 8 year old cousin has a 5c! It’s a hand me down from my uncle but they are still so young! I don’t even know why am eight year old would need a phone!
