Toddler bed transition - any tips?

My son is able to get out of his crib so we have no choice but to transition him to a toddler bed. He will only fall asleep if we are sitting in the room with him. Otherwise, he stands in the doorway and screams. Anyone have any tips that have worked for them?

Be consistent. It took ehhh maybe three weeks for us to get him to stay in bed and fall asleep by himself. But now he stays in bed and actually doesn’t even get out when he wakes up. 
But what we did was this, first week we started by sitting at the end of his bed and anytime he got up we walked him back to bed and say it’s bed time goodnight. After the third time we wouldn’t say anything. Just walk him back get him in bed and walk back to where we were sitting. Try to do the littlest amount of physical touch. Our son thought it was a game when we would pick him up and put him in bed. It was fun for him. So that’s why we just have him walk and get back in bed by himself. 
Second week we sat outside the door with the door open so he could see us from his bed. Anytime he got up we just say get back in bed please. Till he does it himself. Hopefully 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 by the third week you can close the door and he will be able to do it by himself. The third week we would close the door and sit outside so if he does get up we were right there to tell him to get back in bed. 
Also, luckily our son can’t open the door still, so that helped at the beginning
