Baby with acid reflux! When does it get better?

My baby is formula fed and have had acid reflux since he was 2 weeks old . He is almost 4 months now and it seems like it is getting worse. He is unable to eat more than 3-4 oz of milk and is always crying. The doctor did not prescribe medication because he is not losing weight. We keep his bed elevated and he drinks thick formula and all but when does it stop? It breaks my heart to see him this way and feeding him is always so difficult

I’d find to new pediatrician. Both my girls had acid reflux and were put on Zantac and it gave them so much relief. Why in the world would a doctor not want to give your baby meds to relieve their pain and discomfort is beyond my comprehension. My first daughter had a pretty severe case and didn’t grow out of it until 18 months. My second daughter’s reflux wasn’t as bad and was off her medication at around 5 months. All kids are different though. I couldn’t imagine my girls not having any relief from it without the medication. It works and it’s not harmful to them. Plus studies have shown that babies with this that sleep on an incline had very little to no positive affect on their reflux. Poor baby. I’d demand he be put on medication!

My LO had reflux and was on boob and formula.. We used Dr.Browns bottles to reduce gas and gave her Similac Pro Sensitive formula.. Her reflux was never a problem after we started this

My son had pretty severe reflux, that first month and a half of his life were a living hell trying to figure out what was wrong. Once he was diagnosed they prescribed Zantac and we switched to the enfamil AR formula it was like night and day. He still spit up quite a bit but his discomfort was gone. When he turned 4 months our pediatrician said to stop it and see what happens but it was still pretty bad so we put him back on it. I’d say once he was about 6 months, and solids started getting introduced, it’s resolved itself. He’s almost 9 months now and hasn’t been on it for months and is doing great. 
I’d definitely suggest a different pediatrician. I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with it. I know how hard it can be.

Maybe you need to change formulas. We switched to Enfamil AR because my daughter was on meds and had acid reflux so bad. She didn't lose any weight, but was spitting up her heart meds. it gets worse around the 4 month mark, then starts to get better. Enfamil AR and meds were a life saver though. We also started a small amount of oatmeal cereal mixed with formula and spoon fed it to her just once a day. It seemed to help too.

Your baby may have a cow's milk allergy or protein allergy. The pediatrician may switch the baby to a hypoallergenic or Amino acid formula. Usually they will try them on Nutramigen a hypoallergenic formula. It is over the counter and easy to find in the stores. Zantac or pepcid may help 20 min before feedings but they would need to be perscibed for the reflux. The baby may also have a rectum that is small making it difficult to pass gas. If that is the case the pediatrician may show you how to do rectal massage at home. You can try tummy massage during crying spells . For our daughter lay a thick towel on the dryer and place her on her belly for 10 min while the dryer is on low heat. It usually will help with gas and soothe her, then the crying just stops.

The pediatrician should have referred you to a GI doctor. When my daughter was diagnosed with reflux, she also did not lose weight but was in contestant pain. She was put on Zantac and the GI doctor also told us to put one teaspoon of cereal per ounce of formula in her formula. She was also put on similac alimentum and it’s thinner than most formulas, so the cereal was suppose to keep everything down. Now she’s 11 months and has more or less grown out of it. No more Zantac, but still gets some cereal in the formula.

yes. my son had til he was 4 or 5 months. I had drank the bottle slow and burp and sit him up for awhile after he finished
