Tarrifs? good idea or bad idea?

As we know this week the trump campaign has stack tariffs on imported gets from Canada Mexico and the EU.. Is this nationalist approach a good approach to our economy or will this just make things more expensive for us in the United States? This seems to be a ploy to help out trump's fellow steel friends and doesn't seem to care about the cost to American pockets

As a Canadian no. We own a business that exports to the US and one of our biggest selling points is it’s cheaper for Americans to buy bcs of the exchange rate. A tariff would change a lot for Canadian businesses and for Americans. And Canada and the US have been doing business for many many years. The majority of our water is exported to the US. Canada has been generous enough to offer water to many states that rely on it as a source. To me, it’s insulting. Trump also tried to force our prime minster to put a plan in place to take in US dairy at a rate higher than our dairy board felt comfortable with. Doing it would jeopardize our dairy farmers. So he wants to force us to buy more US products then tax the products we sell to the US 🤔. Pretty insulting.

This week has really shown where his focus resides which is listening to celebrities with no experience in what they’re talking about and continuing his battle against actors and reporters. I once hoped he’d realign his focus, but I don’t see that happening at all. The guy is fucking orange joke

Free Trade is nearly always a win-win for everyone. I'm only in favor of tariffs imposed on hazardous products that we shouldn't be encouraging the use of (like opium/precursor of narcotics or pesticides) or companies who use slave and child labor.  Trump's tariffs are just retribution and will backfire. Instead of raising tariffs on imported steel he should negotiate lower tariffs on exported steel, since he's such a good negotiator 🙄

He did that to China and then ended up helping them if I remember correctly! I think that’s his tactic, he bluffs to come across tough and then turns around and offers them something even better...

Dump can have at it, given Canada, EU and Mexico can tariff the US back. 
In the long run all it will do is cut off trade with other countries.

I completely understand the sentiment behind the tariffs. If more americans choose to buy American, then the cost of American-made goods should decrease based on the economic supply-and-demand model. 
However, as a libertarian who wants far less government oversight and regulation, I think this is a bad idea. It penalizes not only individual purchasers who may be forced into either paying more than they can afford for products or not purchasing products at all, but it also penalizes businesses who rely on imports. Large corporations may not be affected, other than raising consumer prices, but small businesses will see increases in their bills and may not be able to increase their prices enough to cover expenses while remaining competitive in their markets. This may end up shutting down some smaller businesses and giving ever more business to the large ones. 
I understand putting America first. In fact, I support that idea. But this is a detriment to American economy branded as a benefit.

Bad idea, no one wins in a trade war. This is just a tax on the American people. I'm much more in favor of free trade. Although, we do need to crack down on China, they've been doing some shady things to us. No need to tariff our allies though, this is just bad policy. The economy is booming right now thanks to Trump's tax cut and rollback on regulations, this was a move in the wrong direction. I'm hoping all of this is just to gain leverage for NAFTA negotiations, but we'll see.

My husband has a lot of foreign clients and they've brought this up a lot, they all think it's a terribe move but none of them are affected (that I know of).
