Who else has issues with their platelet count?
I am pregnant with my third child and I have yet to meet or read about someone else who’s platelets drop while they are pregnant. If you’re curious, when the platelet count drops too low, you are not eligible to use epidural.
So to try and make my story somewhat short, when I was in the hospital with my first son, I was 20, so of course nervous. The nurse comes in and says she has good and bad news. Bad news was that I couldn’t have epidural. Good news was, they could give me medicine trough the IV to take the edge off. So labor was 11 hours but it went pretty easy comparing it to my second child.
My second child, I let them know my platelet count dropped in my last pregnancy. So about 30 weeks pregnant with my second, they started blood work to see where my count was and surprise, surprise, my platelets were starting to drop. The doctor put me on prednisone to see if it would help raise it so I at least had the optional use epidural. Each week of blood work we were noticing a fluctuating pattern and I was scheduled to be induced in hopes we made it at the time my platelets were higher. We get to the hospital and my count was at 98. For the anesthesiologist to approve the go ahead for epidural it has to be 100 so they wouldn’t take me. They put a steroid through the IV to raise it and within an hour, it was back down to 70s. So once again I went through labor without epidural and labor that was worse than my first son.
Now that I am pregnant with my third, I am not going to bother with trying any options I have. I might as well go natural again and not make myself go through the steroids and blood work. What amazes the doctors is afterwards, my platelet count goes back up on its own.
I am slightly freaking out though because I have to go through it again and knowing the pain, is scaring me. Im afraid to go through it again. I had my glucose test at 26 weeks and my platelet count was already dropping.
Is there anyone else that has to go through this same thing because I have not come across anyone who has issues with their platelets.
