I just did it my first time yesterday!!! I'd say the try fingers first. 1 or 2 just to make you a little more comfortable without taking the whole thing. Its what i did and it made my experience fuckjng GREAT without being in pain. Also, use A LOTTTTTTT of lube!!

Lots and lots and lots of lube. If it hurts, dont force it. My first time it was so painful and we tried to keep going and i ended up bleeding and being in pain for 3 days afterwards. 
And If he is on the bigger side i would definitely suggest doing some foreplay with toys and again, lots of lube!!
