How common is it actually to have a period when pregnant? Read below

I see a ton of people claiming "you can still get a period while pregnant" but have been told by my OBGYN that that isn't possible. 
Would it be because some women have a naturally light and short period so they think it's just their period? 
When I say period, I mean a 6-7 day long blood fest with bright red blood that fills several many pads with blood clots.

When I got pregnant the first time, I had a full blown period, 4-5 days of heavy bleeding, cramping, etc. I tested two weeks after that because half of my symptoms went away but the half didn’t and test came back positive. Went to the doctors office later that week and it turns out I was roughly 6 weeks pregnant meaning I probably got pregnant on my period or shortly before it. Made zero sense, the doctor said it happens very rarely and that it was kind of a special case (I was also 16 at the time). 
Granted, I ended up having to abort the baby at 9 weeks from parental and boyfriend pressure. I don’t know if it would have gone full term but by the looks of it, it would have.

Yes. Some women mistake spotting or bleeding during pregnancy for a period. It is not a period. It is a possible to remain pregnant while having a period.

Your period is the shedding of the uterine lining. Some women have bleeding that somehow happens around the same time as their period during pregnancy but it absolutely is not a period. If you were to shed the lining of the uterus, there wouldn’t be a place for the baby to implant and you wouldn’t be pregnant. So I would say it’s really rare.
