Depo vs the pill?

I’ve been on the depo shot for around 8 months now. It does its job ok however it hasn’t stopped my periods like I was informed it would by the nurse who’s given me all 3 shots so far. My periods come irregularly, there’s never much blood but they go on for ages. I understand that with the pill you still have periods, but you are much more in control of when they come. Has anyone tried both depo and the pill, and if so which one is best?

I’ve never been on depo, but it’s not a guarantee that ur periods will stop. Progestin only methods, like depo, are most known for causing irregular/spotting. That can include longer time frames with or without bleeding, random bleeding, or frequent bleeding, at any given time. Combination methods, which contain estrogen, are what typically helps u have more regulated bleeding, because the estrogen stabilizes ur uterine lining better. I was on a combination pill for 5 years & for most of that time, I had a very regular ‘period’. I say “most of that time”, because I ended up going a year without a period due to the fact that hormonal birth control thins ur uterine lining, which can sometimes result in little to no bleeding. But, yea, if u really prefer more regulated bleeding, then definitely go on a combination method such as the pill, patch, or vaginal ring.

I was on the depo for 9 months and hated it, and then didn’t get a normal cycle for a year after stopping it. I was on the pill for 12 years and never really had a bad experience on it.
