Thoughts?

I think this would be a great idea
But I think a lot of people would ruin it for those who really need it 
I know people who are petty enough to steal fruit to sell (it’s done in my town) or people would use the fruit to litter, throw at windows, cars, people etc

Do you think it’s a good idea or too risky?

It's a good idea. Or have strategically placed gardens with all kinds of produce that the homeless can go to and get fresh fruit and vegetables. The gardens could be worked by volunteers and/or non violent offenders and people on probation.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think fruit trees are usually a lot of work. It would be great if the extra work the trees needed created new jobs AND provided more food. Or maybe homeless shelters could get funds to grow gardens themselves

Someone would find a worm or other insect in their fruit, then sue the city. But that’s the cynic in me.

It’s a good idea. But the trees won’t be in fruit all year round. My mums apple trees have just started growing their apples now

I love the idea! Unfortunately there will only be fruit part of the year but can you imagine how much brightness it would add to the life of a homeless person to have fresh fruit?

Where I’m from there’s all kinds of random fruits trees everywhere, you can just pick it and eat it. Most of the time the fruits aren’t edible tho so this would only work if they were taking care of it

It's a great idea in theory.  The unused fruit causes a huge mess on sidewalks. We only have a few cherry trees and that alone makes a sticky mess every year. Fruit trees typically need a lot of care as well. Pruning, fertilizing, etc. 
I think if someone wanted one in a community garden that would be better than sidewalks.
