Fees in Public School
So my old high school was having budgeting issues even when I was a student there. Always making cuts, our teacher’s salaries sucked and so on. They’ve been trying to years to get a tax levy passed but it has failed (4 times now) because no one wants to pay higher taxes for the school. It’s the only one here, then next one is a distance away (our biggest rival). So they don’t have federal funding for the time being, and they don’t have incoming tax money. So the school board passed a policy where there will be a classroom fee per student of 40$. And then an extracurricular fee of 30$ per student, per activity (with a cap at 150$).
People in my town are outraged, but the way I see it, they need the money to stay up and running and no one wanted a 1% tax increase so this is the last option. They’ve already cut all classes that aren’t a graduation requirement; they only have a gen art and music, gen PE, no AP classes offered, no more foreign languages. They offer free and reduced lunch to students who need it, and those students are exempted from the fee.
What do you all think? Would you be angry? Would you send your child to a different school and drive them to and from school everyday to avoid this?
