At $20 a week you'd have paid full price after only 20 weeks, so I don't think the price is right, but I think the idea is a good one. MaxiCosi is actually trialling a sort of rental scheme for car seats here in the UK that we're using (you pay just over half the retail price for a brand new seat but when the child outgrows it you give it back and it gets recycled).
