Buying for Baby

Looking for help from experienced mommas. I'd like to start buying for baby now so we don't kill our budget later. I'm only barely 13 weeks. I'm hoping to do a gender neutral nursery. I want to be surprised at birth. Partner wants to know gender. So we're undecided still. What do you suggest we start buying first that is ok to buy this early? I'm assuming someone will throw us a baby shower as this is our first and probably one of the last grandbabies in both our families. But I don't want to count on others for our child. We started later in life because we wanted to be financially responsible.
