I’m kind of confused on how they work... Are they to make posts trend? Or is upvoting a way to show that an opinion is more popular? Or is it just a like? Plz explain this.

Sometimes an upvote just means “I agree”, “that’s funny”, “well said”, etc. More upvotes will bring comments to the top if you have comments sorted by top, not new. “Hot” topics are ones that tend to get a lot of comments/upvotes and are considered to be trending.
