If you’ve never used one and have no clue where in your cycle you ovulate start a few days after your period ends and keep testing until you get a positive.  Afternoon is best for testing but it really depends what brand of test you’re using so make sure you thoroughly read the instructions. A test is positive once the test line is as dark or darker than the control line.
