is it okay to only work with a midwife and not an OB?

the Care Center that I've been going to since I found out I was pregnant only has me see a midwife. If I'm considered high risk then they will introduce me to an OBGYN. Is that normal? Two of my friends who were both high-risk are telling me I should find a doctor and not just have a midwife.

Certified nurse midwives are totally capable of caring for normal pregnancies. Your friends had additional needs that needed medical intervention, but unless something changes in your pregnancy, a midwife tends to be more patient-centered, and I’ve only heard good things about midwife care (and have had a great experience myself!).

I only see midwives. During delivery, an OB will be on call and in the hospital if needed but I love the midwives!

I had a horrible experience with my midwife (missed significant thing in my chart and severely pushed unnecessary surgery) and a more holistic and great experience with my OB.  I know most midwives are great, but just because their a certified midwife doesn’t mean they’ll automatically be a great fit.  I’ve learned your relationship with your caretaker matters more than the specifics of their training (as long as they you know have training :-) ) in a low risk pregnancy.
