Overprotective or normal?

My MIL wants me to allow my 23 month old to go to the lake with her for the day. They have a camper on a lake lot about an hour away. This makes me so uncomfortable, and my husband thinks I’m being crazy. Kids drown in lakes all the time, I’m afraid of something happening to him with out us there. I don’t think she would purposely put my son in danger but no one watches your child the way you would as a parent. They drink a lot when they are at the lake and I am worried about him being properly supervised. I don’t think she would be as adamant about sunscreen application as I would, and I also worry about him staying on his regular schedule. It is very hard to get him to nap away from home and I think it will be near impossible for him to nap with ppl coming in and out of the camper to use the bathroom. We are also having his birthday party the day after and I need him to be well rested and in a good mood. It’s not just bc she is my MIL I wouldn’t be comfortable with my parents taking him anywhere similar.

Nope nope nope. It's the lake thing, like you said. It only takes 1 minute of someone getting distracted for a drowning to happen. And lakes in particular tend to be slippery from algae...I wouldn't risk it.

If you are not comfortable-don’t do it.  I’m with you-I wouldn’t allow it.  I’d rather be called crazy!  Good luck!  And never doubt your mom instincts!

No, I wouldn’t allow anyone who would be drinking to take care of my kid near a body of water without me or my husband there. Doesn’t matter who it is.

I am the exact way. If I dont feel comfortable with a situation hes not going. They know by now not to ask. I dont care how others feel. If I'm being ridiculous or not. My son literally runs off and you wouldn't even know it happened. We ended up getting a back pack leash while out in big crowds. Never thought that would be my child. But it is. You're the Mother so, do what is best for your child.

I would feel the same way that you do. I don't think there is anything wrong with you saying no. I know doing that is easier said than done but you need to do what you feel is best for your child. Mothers instinct is everything.

My family is just straight up not like that. My mom started taking my daughter on Saturday nights when she was 2 months old. I’m watching her kids while she goes to Italy with my dad in October for 3 weeks. My daughter is currently with them a few hours away from me, at a lake. We have a lot of family there, though, and neither of my parents are drinkers. I would feel differently if it was my in-laws, as they don’t swim well. My mom also won’t allow a permanent pool or hot tub at our home (our families share a large house), and is the most conscious person I’ve ever met regarding watching little ones around water. I don’t think you’re being totally crazy or anything, I just know it would be fine in my family.

My grandparents have a cabin out at a lake about 2.5 hours away from us, and I've let my mom take my daughter out there without me a few times. However, my mom doesn't drink and watches my daughter probably better than even I do. My mom was insanely overprotective of us as kids, and I know my daughter is as safe as can be in her care. If I doubted her judgement in the slightest, my daughter would not be out there without me! Only do what you're comfortable with!
