Did I do the right thing??

My ex of 3 years dumped me due to depression and to better himself. He also said that I deserve better. He was always talking about suicide and would vent to me throughout the relationship. His family did not know of this because he made me promise not to tell anyone.

When he dumped me, I met with his mother 2 days afterward and told her everything so she can watch for his safety and know what has been going on.

1 month after separation, I emailed my depressed ex to check on him and encourage him. He replied very angrily saying I made things worse, I broke his promise, and he’s very mad at me. He said It was a obvious that I told his family and now he feels his family will look at him differently. He also said never talk to him again.

I’m hurt since I only meant well for his safety and loved him with all my heart. Did I do the right thing by telling his mother even tho he hates me now?
