Are Christian and Catholic two different things?

Question

I was taught that Catholics practice Christianity just like Baptists and Lutherans and people of that nature, but lots of people refer to them as two completely separate religions. I often notice in lists like “Buddhist, Hindu, Pagan, Satanist, Christian, Catholic.”
Just curious.

I’m catholic. Christianity and Catholicism are not two different things. Christianity is the main religion which has different denominations. Catholicism is one of the many denominations and others are Protestant, Church of England, orthodox etc. 
Other religions also have this like Islam has many denominations too which my Muslim friends explained to me long ago but I can’t remember names. 
So if you are catholic you are Christian (a catholic christian)

Christian: "a person who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Jesus Christ and his teachings."
So what I understand is that any religion that practices Christs teaching and believe in Him, can be classified as Christian.

It’s my understanding that Christianity is practiced by Catholics and Protestants. The Protestant church formed off of Catholicism because a King (my history teacher would kill me for not remembering his name) wanted a divorce and the Catholic Church doesn’t recognize divorce. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I was raised Protestant, Methodist, but was still a Christian.

They are and I really wish people would stop saying they aren’t. Also as a Catholic I’m just going to say this; 
we don’t worship saints we honor them, 
Also we are asking for them to pray for us not necessarily praying to them. It’s kinda like posting your prayer request on FB
yes we honestly believe that the bread and wine is Christ,
No the pope doesn’t have complete control over us so we actually can think for ourselves (especially when running for office) 
Confession is essential one on one counseling sessions to talk about what we did wrong and how to make up for it
Prepatory is the waiting room to heaven so it’s like sitting there waiting for the nurse to call your name so you can go in to see the doctor.

There are different branches of Christianity. Several religions believe in God, however there are a few things in each religion are aren’t practiced/believe by another. For example, Catholics believe in Purgatory, however Methodists don’t. But both revolve around believing in God

Think of it like the military. You have army, marines, navy, coast Guard, air force etc. They're all considered being military but branch out to more branch-specific training/duties. Same with Christianity. It's used to speak of all religions following Jesus christ- son of God the Father. But it branches out to catholicism, Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, etc. Each having still believing in God, and for the most part having the same thoughts and practices, but each have their own ways of practice or ways that another religion may not agree with.

People consider them different bc they’re drastically diff from other Christian groups and the following is quite different from other groups however they’re still a group that is Christian.
