Yes. You have to until he's past his birth weight and gaining at a good rate. After that, you'll just feed on demand. When you wake bub, you need to realllllly wake bub. Take off clothes, change diaper, tickle feet. Make sure he's fully awake to nurse and get his fill.

Our pedi said that the answer to this depends how big baby was at birth. 
Smaller babies: you need to wake them until they reach birth weight again 
Bigger babies: not necessary to wake them at all. 
But regardless, once they reach birth weight again, it’s no longer necessary to wake them during the night to feed them (unless a doctor tells you otherwise of course).

I did, but my baby never cried when he got hungry. We started doing on demand feeding when he started getting better at letting us know that he was hungry.

I never did not even in the hospital... my son has slept through the night since birth, never had issues gaining wait. I nursed on demand. If he woke up I knew he needed to eat. Otherwise I let him sleep. During the day he nursed every 2.5-3hours over night he slept a full 6.5 hours at least.

If he's up to and above birth weight and has consistently good amount of dirty and wet diapers, no. If the weight gain isn't sufficient or the dirty or wet diapers aren't numerous enough, yes.

Yes. Babies can easily go into shock from missing feeds when they're newborn, at which point they won't wake up to feed and actually need to be drip fed (I know someone who nearly lost their baby because she'd been told babies always wake up if they're hungry). Even now my son is 3 months I still don't let him go over 4 hours during the day or 6 hours during the night but its more to protect my supply (and he usually feeds every 2 hours during day and 4-5.5 on a night anyway).

They told me to wake her during the day, but not at night. Unless your baby has had trouble with excessive weight loss or not gaining, I wouldn’t wake at night.
