Being the pursuer?

I am a sophomore in biology in college and I think this senior is really cute. He is a friend of a friend and I’ve spoken to him a few times. He’s extremely smart and he’s at the top of his class (mechanical engineering), and I want to tell him that I think he’s cute and that we should hangout sometime. Would it be weird I pursue him and ask him out? Or should it be the guy that pursues me first so that I know he’s really into me?
