They’re not the same. You know when you have to pee really bad and you kinda clench your muscles to hold your bladder til you get to the bathroom? Kinda like pulling your muscles upward? Try to do that right now. 
...that’s a kegel.

If you are doing the actual kegels but only feel it in your butt, you are using the wrong muscles. Kegels aren’t the end all of pelvic floor exercises and if you do them incorrectly, best case, they are ineffective, worst case you can strain your pelvic floor worse.
I would google a “pelvic floor routine”. They have body weight exercises that will strengthen everything, so you’ll get the most bang for your exercise buck. If you are set in Kegels, I would look at a Kegelmaster 2000 (the LAMEST name I know)... it’s designed to only work if you use the correct muscles and there are difference levels of resistance. Basically weight lifting for the vag. Best $120 I ever spent.

Nurse at a female continence clinic... we tell our patients a kegel is done by squeezing like you’re trying not to pass gas in a crowded room . That’s how you do them. Our starting regimen is hold for 5 seconds, relax for 10. Do 5 in a row 4 times a day.
