What exactly is age of consent?

This may sound dumb but I’m currently 17 and I recently started talking to a 22 years Old. Before you judge me, he had never pressured me into sex, pays for my nails, hair, takes me on dates and always checks on me. Not to say that I’m in it for the money but I like older men because boys my age are very immature and have 0 goals in life. No I wouldn’t date a 30 year old but age 22 and 17 isn’t that far apart it’s the exact same thing as a freshman dating a senior and as long as he’s sweet and isn’t pressuring me into things I don’t really see an issue but however when I asked my mom “how old is to old for me to date” she says “18” but I’m 17 and did some research saying that the state I live in (Illinois) has a consent age of 17. Does this mean that me and him can be together? Even sexually as long. As I give consent? I honestly wanna go about this the right way because he’s a great guy but I don’t turn 18 for another 6 months and wouldn’t want him to get charged with “sagatory rape” or anything like that. So can someone please explain how I should go about this? All opinions are appreciated even the ones I really don’t wanna hear😂

The hell does a 22 year old want with a kid? I'm currently 20, I can't see myself being with anyone your age. You say boys your age are immature but you are too at that age. Two different mentalities and two different stages in life.

It’s means consent to sex is valid law. So yes you being 17 years old can have sex as long as you consent to it & it’s legal.

When I was 17 I dated a 21 year old, we weren't together for long and wasn't having any type of sex.. my mom was ok with us dating... just take it slow, you're still young..have fun but don't be stupid about it either..

I met my husband when I was a week shy of 18 and he was 22. From what I was told, you need your parent’s consent at 17 if you are under 18.

When I met my so I was seventeen and he was twenty-two. To be fair I was almost eighteen, he looked young for his age and I looked and acted older. I moved out of my mom's house when I was sixteen and went through a lot that made me mature faster than I should have. He didn't know how old I was and I didn't know how old he was, we just assumed that we were close in age. In my state the legal age of consent is 16 unless they are engaging in sex with an authority figure in that case it's raised to 18. It varies from state to state when it comes to the legal age to consent.
