Not talking much?

My daughter (16 months) was saying a few words before she started walking at 14 months, now she just babbles her own words and gestures... she understands a lot, follows directions, waves, high fives, gives kisses and mimics actions. She’s also very social and locks in with eye contact/big smiles... I just thought she’d be talking more by now. Maybe she’s just too busy to focus on speech? Wondering if I should email her doctor or just wait out? I talk to her all day and we read a lot. Anyone else’s May baby not talking much?

My nephew can only say 4 words at 16 months and I didn’t think it was a huge deal since every baby is so different and he is still so young. But the pediatrician has him now going to a speech therapist which I didn’t think would happen with him being this young. My daughter who is also 16 months (2 weeks younger than him) can pretty much say any word, copies any thing we say and talks in small sentences but my daughter who is now 4 wasn’t talking like this until she turned 2.. So I don’t think I would be worried yet since every baby does stuff at their own time and they are still so young right now.. But that’s just me.

I talked to my doc cause I was concerned too and he said about 3-5 words was fine a long as there were no other concerns.  I also started realizing that she says more than I thought she does it just happens at random times and doesn't always sound like real words.  She still won't say "Mama". She just laughs at me when I try to get her to.  As long as kiddo is babbling, I wouldn't worry about it.  Oh, and I work with a speech pathologist.

My son is 15 months (16 months on the 22nd). He doesn’t say much. All he says is momma, dada, uh-oh, and more. At his 15 month check up the doctor said he should have been saying 3-6 words (he started saying more after that app) and he wasn’t. She gave me a referral for an evaluation with early intervention to see if he needs speech therapy. I made a post on here feeling so down because I felt maybe I failed my son. But many many many people commented on it saying that their children didn’t talk until 2 some not until 3. I stopped worrying about it. And I haven’t even contacted early intervention. I just try to work with him every day and I’m going to wait until his 18 month check up and if by then he’s not talking more I may contact them.

Normal. When they learn new skills some other things tend to pause for a little bit.

My son didn’t start saying a lot of words until after 12 months. Now he says 8-10 words. He also babbles some random funny stuff that I wish I knew what he was saying. I think it’s normal. Definitely bring it up at her 18 month appt if she hasn’t improved from now until then.
