What does this mean?

Question

I had my appointment earlier and the doctor checked my cervix. He said that I am thinned but not dilated any. What does this even mean? I thought that the two were hand in hand but now I’m just confused. I’ve had contractions for the past couple days and figured they were doing SOMETHING and I’d be at least dilated a little bit... I feel like this pregnancy is never ending 😭

Your cervix has to ripen before labor/delivery can happen. It has to efface (thin out) AND dilate but they aren’t mutually exclusive. At 35 weeks, I was about 90% effaced but still no dilation. It just means your cervix has gone from very long to short whereas dilation is when the opening of the cervix widens. Effacement is cervix changing horizontally, dilation is a change vertically.

The images someone posted are fabulous.  Thinning simply means the baby is exerting enough pressure, but you are NOT in labor yet.  Once you begin to dilate you SHOULD feel contractions on and off and it signals labor has begun.  Though also keep in mind that you can be stuck at 1-2cm dilated for a week or two... so it doesn’t mean baby time, just that your body is prepping.

It means as y get closer to birth/ due date your cervix get softer.... before pregnancy your cervix is hard and closed..... if you have had previous babies your cervix is pretty much soft all time..... nothing to worry about... totally normal part of pregnancy in preparing for birth as it does have to stretch and open 💕
