Accidental tipping?

🐴🐧

A few days ago my husband and I were in a restaurant and I overheard a lady talking to her friend about accidentally tipping someone $60. I don’t know how the mistake happened, but the next morning she realized that she had tipped $60 when she didn’t mean to. She went back to the restaurant and told the owner she made a mistake. The owner told her there was nothing that could be done. He couldn’t ask the waitress to give the money back and she was so happy to receive it. The lady said that clearly she made a mistake and that the restaurants reputation was on the line if he didn’t do something. The owner decided that he would eat the money and reimbursed her.

I was appalled as I was listening to her. The way she recounted her story made her seem like a stuck up snob. It was not because lack of money that she needed the tip back, but told her friend that no one leaves a tip for that much and that was ridiculous to assume that was the correct tip amount. I have personally seen many stories where people have left hefty tips for waiters and waitresses.

So if you realized that you left bigger tip than you intended, would you have gone back and said something? Or would you just let it go?

I personally would have just let it go because it was my mistake. I think taking a tip back from someone is tacky and unthinkable.
