Identical or fraternal?

Okay.. so this might be a silly question but I’m new to this whole twin thing.. how do you know from your ultrasound if you are having identical or fraternal twins?

Mo/Mo (share a placenta and sac) and Mo/Di (share a placenta and separate sacs) twins are always identical. Di/Di twins are most often times fraternal (separate placentas and sacs). However, if the babies are the same sex you’d need to have them genetically tested to know if they are identical or not.

Di/di means they have their own sac and own placenta. And they are not “most often” fraternal. There is a 33% (that’s actually a big percentage) chance they can still be identical. However, they are the only twin combo that can be fraternal and if they are boy/girl then you know 100% they are fraternal. Otherwise, if they are same sex and look the same the only way to know if they are identical is the panorama blood test done around 10 weeks or wait and have them tested when they are born.

With the Panorama test they can tell you if your di/di twins are fraternal or identical before they’re born.  I’m carrying fraternal  di/di boys :)

My OB was able to tell my twins are identical at my first appointment because they are in the same placenta but different yolk sacs (the one fertiziled egg at conception had split into 2), fraternal twins have separate placenta and yolk sacs (there were 2 separate eggs that were fertilized at the same time, which is why fraternal twins can be either boy/girl, boy/boy, or girl/girl) is how my specialist explained it to me. I never knew how it all worked either, very interesting stuff 🤔

If the babies are the same sex there’s no way to know until birth no matter if there’s one placenta or two. My boys were di/di and when they were born had two different blood types so we knew right away they were fraternal not identical.

What does di/di mean? 
I just thought because my babies were in two separate sacs that they were fraternal.
